Something to ponder about

Take a look at this interesting article -> http://www.singaporeangle.com/2006/11/non-sequitur-economics.html

It really provided me with a better view of economics and the way it affects our lives. Wonder why we were never taught about such relationships back in school. Would have made the dull subject of economics much more interesting if we were shown how it linked back to real life.

Coming back to the crux of the article, the author stayed away from making conclusions and instead left the reader to infer his own based on the facts and figures that he provided. I think this is a good example of objective reporting. Of course, the article is based on a certain theme and the information will of course be linked to that. Hence no article can ever be totally objective but that's being too theoretically.

If you like the article, you might want to read the other interesting post about the recent Chinese movie (starring Andy Lau). And maybe check back regularly for other interesting posts by the author (have added his link on my page as well)

Yo Beng!

Economics is actually a very fun topic. The general problem is that the education system likes to treat it as fact, making it extremely dry.

Now if, back in JC, I had understood that macro-economics was in fact the study of human nature (to put it very simply), I'd have had much less trouble with it than I did (although I'd probably have gotten a pretty low grade, since the topic is mostly subjective).

That article's author really nailed it when he said for us to be skeptical about the "facts" presented to us. If one can change human behavior on a large scale, one can effectively change the "rules" of economics.

Just my 2 bucks worth of random chatter.

PS: Glad you're keeping an eye on future spending now. It is a matter of deciding what is your comfort level is for savings and aiming towards that "nest egg". Just make sure you partition the saved funds for Jarren, yourself and the family and continue to fight inflation's effects on the funds.

Best Regards,
Chee Wai

Well, I didn't take economics during JC but had to take one module during Uni. Have to admit that maybe one module of economics doesn't give me the full picture of what the subject entails.

But all I can remember now is the law of demand/supply. Which doesn't really take an expert in economics to say the same things. I'm sure I already knew that from playing all those trading computer games ;-)

About inflation, it all seems gradual and such when you look at graphs but the effect is usually more sudden, like when your plate of chicken rice starts to suddenly cost 50 cents more.

All I can say, from a layman point of view, is that with the current saving interest rate of less than 1%, your money is effectively depreciating if you leave it in a saving account. Hence the need for other alternatives.

BTW, when you going to update your blog ?

I'm guessing I'll update my blog once-a-week or less. I figure if I can the time to write stuff into my blog, I can spare the time to write stuff into my thesis and prelim reports. hahaha!
