Apple IPhone

Been too busy lately to update the blog...

But read about the new iphone from Apple on the internet. Take a look yourself -> http://www.apple.com/iphone/

Felt really good after going through the demo. It's not just the look factor but the user interface is also really solid... It's like Apple had read my mind and designed the exact device to suit my needs. Only way they could do better is to add telepathic control ;-)

Heard from someone that it will be available in Singapore later half of the year at S$799 but this is not confirmed news though. If the iPhone works exactly like how it appeared on the demo, then it could be time to drop my Dopod and switch to something more sexy :-)

People here are raving about the new iPhone, but I'm rather skeptical. It's US$500 here and I think people will be paying for a phone, iPod, Pda, camera and a "blackberry" device.

If you need a sexy device to do all of the above stuff, then it's probably worth the money, but if people need just a cellphone, the iPhone is a big waste of money (on a really cool toy though).

Well, you've hurt my feelings now since I am one of those who uses a device that is "more than a cellphone" ;-)

I used to carry a PDA + handphone around but it gets kind of irritating to have 2 bulging pockets everywhere I go. So I took the plunge and got my first O2 XDA, which was really expensive then (even more expensive than iPhone in terms of actual cash value). Have not looked back since and I've now upgraded to a Dopod 818, which cost considerably cheaper than the XDA. Even then, that is close to the quoted iPhone price.

I used to think I was the odd one out but looking around in Singapore, everyone seems to have a PDA-phone, businessman, student... Most of the younger engineers in my company have them too.

I think in comparison to the predecessors, the iPhone does provide quite a good value, given the features it provides, more in terms of usability and user-friendlyness and not in terms of technical specs. Windows mobile is now WM5.0 and yet the same complaints about usability is there since its first incarnation. I'm tired of waiting for Microsoft to listen to their customers.

I will probably wait for the iPhone to mature first to the 2nd Gen, since all the first generations will have teething problems. Anyway, my Dopod is still shiny new ;-)

I get the impression that PDA-phones tend to have much better sales in Asia as compared to Europe/US. In US, everyone chooses the operator and not the phone. And they seem reluctant to shell out money for a phone. Definitely not the case back home in Singapore.

Apple should consider releasing in Asia first... And we complain less too(at least in official channels). Look how many Singaporeans continued to use the Dopods and O2s despite the hang-ups and reliability issues. In US, you probably get sued...

You better start getting used to this to prevent a culture shock when you're back ;-)

Hehehe, sorry to bruise your feelings, but I've never been a fan of even basic cell phones. I'm not saying that having a all-in-one device is bad (Singaporeans love k-in-one things ... all the way from coffee to shampoo). Like I've said, if people really find it useful to have all those features in a single device, I think it's great! Personally, if I had wanted a cellphone, it'd be a simple no-camera Nokia :P.
